Today’s outing was far warmer than any so far this year!

The first (and best) sighting of the day came on the approach to Shellness where two short-eared owls were displaying over the fields (see photos). Superb! Great views had by all from the car.    One caught up with us later near the car park.  Unfortunately on the way back a walker was taking his (unleashed) dog through the field, so no hope of further views.

Shellness sightings: 5 Marsh harrier [female], brent geese, shelduck, redshank, turnstone, ringed plover, starling, lapwing, curlew, black-tailed godwit, skylark, oystercatcher, meadow pipit, black-headed gull, kestrel, linnet.

Capel fleet: 3 Marsh harrier [1 male, 2 female], 2 red-legged partridge, lapwing, black-headed gull, greylag, kestrel, brent geese.

Harty: Shelduck, avocet, 2 marsh harrier [female], brent geese, 8 snipe, teal, kestrel, greylag, black-headed gull.

  1. As a post-script to my Shellness report, I should have added a further highlight of the day, a lone House Martin – spring is definitely on its way. Apologies for its previous omission, and thanks to Paul for reminding me.
