December Birds - The Swale and Thames Estuary

Our first trip in December found us at Shellness at the extreme east end of the Swale. As is quite usual now, I bought a loaf of “Mother’s Pride” from a shop in Leysdown, and tried feeding the black headed gulls on the seawall. Of course, this is a purely scientific venture. The aim is […]

Dungeness

18 keen birdwatchers joined me for our last outdoor meeting of 2013.   A bright sunny day, with a surprisingly mild breeze gave us an excellent opportunity to enjoy some sea watching.   The patch was busy as usual with many black-headed and herring gulls, with a few great black backed, lesser black backed and […]

Stodmarsh

Cold and grey, my first walk out with the group for two months did not have the best weather forecast, but 15 of us joined Paul for our Sunday walk at this excellent reserve.   With its mix of habitats there is always the chance of a surprise or two. We set off into the […]

Birding in the Rain

Another wet Wednesday! Where should we go to avoid the worse of the rain? Roger had sent me a wonderful photograph of two species of redpoll that he had ringed earlier in the week at Northward Hill. I have never seen a Common Redpoll.  I knew exactly which alder tree they were feeding in and […]
