Wrens in the garden?

Well – how did you get on with the Big Garden Birdwatch? One of the birds that is very easy to overlook in the garden (and indeed anywhere) is the tiny wren. It is actually one of the commonest birds in Britain as it is found in a wide range of habitats from the south […]

Cliffe Pools and Northward Hill

On Saturday we went to Cliffe Pools. 15 people braved the cold. Perhaps they all knew that cold winter conditions often bring more birds to the pools. One of the first birds found was an immature male scaup amongst the many tufted duck, pochard and pintail. However wigeon was easily the most numerous duck species […]

Feeding Garden Birds

I spend a small fortune on feeding our garden birds. And then what do they do? Feed on the natural stuff growing in the garden. So what can I do? Grow more native wildflowers and trees. Have a look and see what the woodpigeons and goldfinch are up to. Malcolm

Group visit to Elmley National Nature Reserve

Last Sunday our group visited Elmley NNR on what started as a rather cold day but ended in beautiful late afternoon sunshine (with a short eared owl just starting out to hunt for voles!). As usual birds of prey seemed to be everywhere. We saw many marsh harriers, buzzard, merlin, kestrel, little owl and two short […]
