The Bexley Group is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year and one of the major events is a concert with the Sidcup Symphony Orchestra on May 11th – A Celebration of Nature.
Full details can be found at http://www.sidcupsymphony.org.uk/concerts.html
The concert opens with Joseph Haydn’s dramatic Introduction to The Creation, his ‘Representation of Chaos’ at the beginning of the world, leading directly into Vaughan Williams’ overture ‘The Wasps’. Written originally for a performance of Aristophenes’ Greek comedy, from the start it is a brilliant evocation of swarms of rapid flying creatures. Respighi’s ‘The Birds’ features the dove, hen, nightingale and cuckoo, before Vaughan Williams’ ‘The Lark Ascending’, inspired George Meredith’s poem, with violinist Abigail James from The Purcell School for Young Musicians.
The second half begins with ‘Morning’ from Grieg’s incidental music to Ibsen’s Peer Gynt, followed by Wagner’s ‘Forest Murmurs’ from Act II of Siegfried, and to finish, Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, where a mythical bird takes on evil forces and brings renewal to the world.
It should be a wonderful evening of music.
