Here is the latest news from the RSPB team at Dungeness:

Reserve News Updates

Many birds have settled down to nest, but some are still migrating through. Over the last couple of weeks we have seen a huge increase in common terns (we have over 150 on the reserve at the moment) as well as waders who are passing through to feed. A treat on a miserable, wet and windy Wednesday was over 50 black terns coming in and feeding over Burrowes Pit for the duration of the day. The next day they had all disappeared, but for the people who braved the weather to visit us I’m sure they thought it was well worth it!

We’re excited that cattle egrets are still hanging about our Hayfields area. Normally, they would have left by now to find somewhere to breed so we are keeping a watchful eye on them to see what they do. We are starting to see some birds with their babies – goslings and ducklings have hatched and are keeping close to their parents. If you want to see cute fluffy chicks, now is the time! Look out for them in the fields by Boulderwall Farm and on the ponds and lakes around our nature trail.

Our visitor centre has been redecorated this month. A fresh coat of paint, gloss and removal of old signs and posters has really brightened up the centre! Thanks to our amazing team of volunteers who helped complete this with us. We hope you enjoy our newly redecorated visitor centre!

Volunteering opportunity!

Want to try something different? Then volunteer for RSPB Dungeness! We need people who are willing to help our reserve team of staff and volunteers with important conservation tasks around the reserve. Get up close to nature and see a different side of our spectacular reserve by undertaking a variety of habitat management and site maintenance tasks. Opportunities available every Tuesday or Thursday, 9am-4pm. Please contact the reserve on 01797 320588 and ask for Craig or

If you don’t fancy all that manual work, the visitor centre is also looking for friendly and chatty volunteers to help manage our counter and reception area. Volunteer for a full day or half a day based on a rota that is flexible around you. If you love talking to people, particularly about wildlife and are happy to serve people in our shop then please call the reserve on 01797 320588 and ask for Mary or email

Education programme

We are taking school visit bookings for this year’s summer and autumn terms. We will be exploring the reserves pond habitats, seeing what minibeasts live under the water and also trying to identify birds that live on top of it!
