Good news for Swanscombe Marshes, Natural England have declared that it should be a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). Pressure from RSPB, Buglife and Kent Wildlife Trust have opposed the London Resort project and this is a great step forward. Currently the area has been “notified” which gives it the same weight of protection as a fully designated SSSI, there is now a consultation period until 12th July 2021. After this it will be declared, amended or withdrawn.
Buglife are currently leading the campaign to save the habitat of the Distinguished Jumping Spider, at least 77 conservation organisations are supporting this. Read their full article here.
This is by no means the end of the fight but it recognises the area as an an important area for wildlife.
