I’ve discovered a new birding app called “Merlin bird id”. It’s been developed by Cornell university and it’s designed to help bird identification in the field. You can read more about it here. It’s been around for a few years apparently, but it’s recently added a photo id capability which looks good but I haven’t tried it out yet.

The app runs on Apple and Android devices and is free. You have to download a “bird pack” for the region you’re interested in before you can use it. The bird packs cover most of the world as far as I can tell, so could be useful if we’re ever allowed to travel abroad again. The packs are rather chunky so you’ll need a bit of free space on your phones.
