9 of us met on a gorgeous sunny morning. Grasshopper warbler had been sighted so we set off in the direction last seen.
Blackbird, collard dove, goldfinch, pheasant, magpie, whitethroat, house sparrow, shelduck, mute swan, coot, lapwing, heron, wood pigeon, cormorant were all sighted. Marsh frogs were extremely vocal and showing well and lots of marsh marigolds. Grass snake spotted swimming under the bridge, (three seen throughout the day).
Butterflies seen – large white, small tortoishell, brimstone, orange tip and peacock (also caterpillars of the peacock).
Peregrine seen a long way off on the pylon, little grebe, starling, carrion crow, little ringed plover, mallard, swallow, reed bunting, black-headed gull, sedge warbler, redshank, dunnock, skylark, wheatear and robin.
RSPB staff directed us outside of the reserve where the grasshopper warbler had been seen – after hearing it calling for a while we were rewarded with a good view.
Back to centre for lunch in the picnic area.
We set off in the opposite direction and saw canada geese, greylag, garganey, whimbrel, cetti’s warbler (H), chiffchaff, blackcap, great tit, greenfinch, wren, tufted duck, great crested grebe, gadwall, pochard, teal, shoveler, wigeon, little egret, herring gull, moorhen, black tailed godwit and finally kestrel. Total 51.
Since heard that Josie saw the water vole. A great day out.
