On Sunday a number of Gravesend RSPB Group members assisted the ‘Plantlife’ warden, Ben, at Ranscombe Farm Reserve in clearing an area of unwanted scrub. Ranscombe Farm, & nearby Cobham Woods, are areas local to Gravesend, where many interesting plants, insects and birds flourish. The spot where we were working is called Mill Hill, a chalkland site which unfortunately has become overgrown with birch, hawthorn & hazel. While these plants are important to wildlife, in this spot they are crowding out less vigorous chalkland specialities such as orchids. Using loppers & bowsaws, we removed the scrub & left a large area clear for new growth.
We worked hard but also stopped to enjoy Ben’s tea & Sue’s mince pies. If you are interested in helping, Ben runs regular volunteer days. See the ‘Plantlife’ website for more details.
