My wife and I were on board the Thistle Thames Barge, moored on the new pontoon at Gravesend Town Pier last Saturday at 7am, and we saw a kingfisher flying around. Twice it flew right alongside the barge and it was clearly a kingfisher. It perched a couple of times on the steelwork under the pier but spent most of the time flitting back and forth along the between St Andrew’s Church and the pier.
I was amazed to see it as it’s the first time I’d ever seen one but more so because it seemed such an unusual setting. I can’t imagine it was nesting anywhere nearby as the riverside is made up of concrete and sheet piles. Not the ideal place to dig a burrow.
